Kim Kardashian is only a month or so into her second pregnancy , but if she’s already having cravings — she’s very much set. In an interesting press release we received from Wayback Burgers , we learned this fast food chain is offering the Keeping Up star free burgers and milkshakes during her entire pregnancy. That’s right, they even have a special name for the VIP card they sent her as a gift: the “Kim Kard. If we were her, we’d definitely take advantage. But then again — we don’t have paparazzi following us everywhere. Being in the spotlight 24/7 might have her shy away from eating free fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but that doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy it…. Are they offering ice-cream cones, too. Editor’s note: The Kokomo Herald strives for the most part to be politically neutral and present factual stories with as little editorial slant as possible. Our focus is on the positive news that exists in our community. With the recent events involving Planned Parenthood dominating headlines across the nation, however, we felt compelled to offer a series of stories in response to the controversy. This is the second in that series. Jamie Bauder had a choice to make. She was in a personal crisis, feeling uneasy and uncertain and had many more questions than answers. She was not completely alone – her mother and the rest of her family were there to support her. But whatever wisdom and advice they had to offer did not change the fact that this very difficult choice was hers and hers alone. Jamie Bauder decided to keep her baby. “Abortion was never an option,” Bauder asserted. “It was either going to be adoption or I would raise him myself. My mom told me I could do it. My sisters told me I could do it. They believed in me and promised to help when they could, but it came down to me. “Now I look at Noah, almost eight months old now, and I realize it was the easiest tough decision... he’s a gift from God. The baby’s father left Bauder shortly after she discovered she was pregnant and has never wanted any part of raising Noah. Despite her family’s offers to help, Bauder knew she would need some additional help. “What did I need and how was I going to get everything I needed. I didn’t have a job and many places do not want to hire someone who is pregnant, especially the farther along you are,” Bauder said. Enter Living Alternatives Pregnancy Resource Center. “Last August I started coming based on the advice of a friend,” Bauder recalled. “I did not even know about Living Alternatives, so I was excited to know a place like this existed. Shortly after, Bauder entered the H. O. P. E. Program offered by Living Alternatives, which stands for Helping Others Parent Through Education. “Education is what it’s all about, too,” said Bauder. “They told me what the pregnancy would be like, what delivery would be like, and talked about all the things I would need with a newborn. Plus there are the ‘Mommy Bucks’ which make such a difference. Living Alternatives Director, Carol Snyder, said the “Mommy Bucks” are an. Source: kokomoherald.com
It’s one of those stories that makes you double-check the publishing date, just to make sure that this really did happen in the 21st century: Police Officer Akema Thompson nearly lost her chance to try for a promotion to sergeant in the New York... Luckily, she fought for her rights and won, but the fact that this story happened at all is yet another reminder that women are still being treated like second-class citizens in the workplace, even though they make up nearly half of workers. Thompson’s ordeal speaks volumes about the way that female workers are still treated like interlopers in a man’s world. Even though pregnancy discrimination is supposed to be illegal in our country, the NYPD blithely informed her that people who were out on the exam day could only get a make-up test if you were called for court or military service, out with an... In other words, stuff that could happen to men. But even though pregnant women have no real control over when they give birth, there was no exception for women like Thompson. This was no small matter, either, as opportunities to take sergeant’s exams only come around every few years, meaning that Thompson could miss out on years of opportunity simply because biology works the way it has for as long as there have been... This kind of discrimination was supposed to be banned by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, but the fact that the NYPD was so blasé in its refusal to accommodate Thompson shows that the culture has not yet caught up to the law. In many workplaces, particularly in environments like police departments, the assumption that men are the standard and women are the deviation is so widespread that it goes unnoticed. It is the air people breathe. It allows departments to forget about federal law and simply craft policies around things that are normal for men—military service, disability, death but to treat things like pregnancy as unusual events that require no special accommodation. This, even though it’s far more common for a woman to give birth at some point in her work career than for a man to become disabled or to be called up for military duty. Thompson eventually won her right to a make-up test, with help from her union and the legal advocacy group Legal Momentum. The NYPD also agreed to make pregnancy and childbirth exemptions.
