Temple starts program for new parents - Sun Sentinel

Nancy Goldstein — entering her 19th year as director of the Ruth and Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center at B'nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton — always wanted to bring a program for expecting parents to the synagogue. She said: "I wanted them to be comfortable with us before they had their children. I had thought about bringing in a Lamaze (childbirthing technique) class, but I could never find the right teacher. Then I met Ellen Steiner last year. Steiner — a certified lactation counselor from Boca Raton — wanted to start a program for expecting parents at B'nai Torah, a synagogue she lives near. Goldstein and Steiner met and soon after started creating a team of professionals to join the new program — which Goldstein named A Family Nesting Place. Other professionals involved include Jill A. Kay, birth doula (companion). Jennifer Roberts, doula/massage therapist. Chad Rudnick, a pediatrician specializing in newborn and infant care. Steiner said: "I'm at a special time in my life where I'm retired as a speech therapist, but still young. I trained to become a lactation counselor three years ago. I'm passionate about educating people about breastfeeding. I'm so looking forward to working with all the different professionals to share their knowledge. "A variety of community expertise is needed to support these pre-natal (pre-birth) classes at A Family Nesting Place. The evidence-based information will help these new families meet their goals. We are here to inform them and teach them skills to enhance the birthing experience, breastfeeding and baby care. Added Goldstein: "We are excited to offer this unique program to the entire community. The program features sessions on various pregnancy and parenting topics, all led by certified experts. The caliber of our instructors is really quite wonderful. Let the guidance of our experts — and the warmth of our community — support your family during this exciting time. B'nai Torah Senior Rabbi David Steinhardt commented: "This program has great importance, and there are a few reasons why. The first reason is that we need to be responsive to the needs of all our congregants. We also want the synagogue to be inviting to young families and for them to know that we care about them and their future. "And finally, we know that we live in a time during which extended families are scattered, and there is a great need for support from a. Source: www.sun-sentinel.com

Labor of love - Columbus Telegram

COLUMBUS — Members of the Beautiful Butterflies 4-H Club recently took home blue and purple ribbons for their topnotch quilting abilities at the Platte County Fair. But the quilts they entered didn't stay with them for long. “We had to keep reminding ourselves that it wasn’t for us. If it wasn’t our taste or we didn’t like the fabric color, it was OK because it was still going to be cute," said 14-year-old Lauren Benck as she sifted through a neatly piled stack before... “It will mean so much to these teen moms and babies that someone that doesn’t even know them cares about them,” said Darla Neemeyer, executive director of Youth for Christ. Each of the quilts took more than 12 hours to make, but when the time came to part with them the girls didn’t bat an eye. “It makes us happy knowing we’re helping out,” 14-year-old Brooke Benck said. “We knew all along we were going to give them away. Each of the girls looked at the project as a labor of love and pictured the babies who would one day be wrapped in something they created. And the donations came at the perfect time as the program is currently teaching the mothers how to sew. “After they see these quilts they will see how much work it takes,” said Marla Mohrmann, Parent Life director. Just then the girls threw their heads back, thinking of how nerve-racking it was to have the quilts judged. “They were pretty nitpicky,” 14-year-old Sarah Micek said. There are currently 22 teen moms signed up for the Parent Life program. Neemeyer said the quilts will be included in gift baskets handed to new teen mothers in the hospital. “We like that the community is aware that there is a teen pregnancy problem, and obviously these wonderful girls realize how tough it is on a teen mom to be raising a baby,” Neemeyer said. Why I Opted Out Part Two: The Wake Up Call - ChicagoNow (blog)

By the time I started my maternity leave, opting out was the last thing on my mind. I rocked my job. I could build a mean Excel model. I could put out fire drills with the best of them. I was a polished businesswoman who spoke the language of banks, law firms, and management. Even as it became more difficult for me to waddle around the office, I was still working 11 or 12 hour days. There was just too much to do and the clock was running out. Then, suddenly I stopped. I had my son and my laptop sat in my closet, collecting dust. I should be more exact and say, office work ceased for a time. As the mother of a colicky newborn, I was working very hard, contrary to what a woman had told me before I left. "At least you get the summer off. " she said. When my son was about 10 weeks old, I went back to work. He wasn't sleeping through the night and this nursing mom was so sleep deprived but I never gave it a second thought. It felt like the economy was crumbling right under my Cole Haan clad feet. On my sixth day back in the office Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy. Tens of thousands of jobs vanished from Wall Street. My husband who had worked at the same bank since we graduated business school together felt his position was vulnerable. Every day, I left for work, briefcase in one hand, breast pump in the other. Our sitter left at 6 PM so that meant I had to leave no later than 5:15. I could have been in the middle of a meeting with the company CEO but I still had to leave. Luckily that didn't happen but much of what happened in my group went on between 5 and 7 PM. It was an arrive late-leave late kind of group. My husband worked in research so his day often revved up once the market closed at 4 PM and announcements came flying over the wire. At least 3 nights a week once I got the baby down I logged back on for a couple of hours. I had to make up for the hour or so I spent pumping every day. Fortunately after a few months that fell by the wayside. We didn't have a dedicated mother's room so HR advised me to book a conference room and put a note on the door. Still, there were days that "Meeting In Progress" note was not read by the people who came barging into the room, looking for meeting space. Around the time my son was 9 months old, I was promoted. More money and more responsibility is usually good news, right. I wasn't sure. The list of objectives that year was formidable but hey, I can just work through. Source: www.chicagonow.com
