John Przybysz: Traveling while pregnant takes preparation - Utica Observer Dispatch

Pregnant women‘s feet are prone to swelling, so it‘s a good idea to get compression stockings before you leave, Goodell says. Be sure to pack any vitamins and medications you might need while away, and ask your doctor about medications you can pack to safely battle nausea and other pregnant travelers’ maladies. Recovery Compression Socks - A Must-Have For Athletes - Digital Journal

Compression socks are becoming extremely popular amongst athletes. From LeBron James to Robert Griffin III to Meb Keflezighi, you can spot compression garments in many professional sports. Athletes wear compression socks to enhance performance, maintain stamina, energize tired legs, prevent injuries like shin splints, and to speed up recovery after exercise. Compression helps reduce inflammation and increase blood flow following strenuous exercise. This means your legs will ache less, and your muscle tissue will heal faster. But compression socks don’t just benefit athletes. Almost everyone from time to time suffers from tired, achy legs and minor swelling in their ankles and feet. Wearing a mild to moderate compression stocking can reduce or eliminate these symptoms. Compression socks are also ideal for traveling, preventing varicose veins during pregnancy, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. Allegro Athletic Recovery Socks are more than the average compression sock. This soft, stretchy sock provides 15-20mmHg of graduated compression and has an extremely comfortable foot portion. Made with CoolMax Polyester, these socks wick moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry and comfortable in any temperature. The Allegro Athletic Recovery Sock features a padded foot to protect your feet from impact, a reinforced heel for durability, as well as a fitted toe and flat toe seam to prevent irritation and blisters. The one-inch top band keeps the sock in place even during the most strenuous workouts. Marathon runners, basketball players and fitness enthusiasts love wearing compression socks and compression calf sleeves to maintain endurance and improve recovery time. Compression socks improve circulation, which reduces swelling, prevents blood clots, reduces fatigue and helps to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Sitting for a long time without moving can lead to blood pooling in the legs, causing blood clots to form. This is why it is important to wear compression socks while traveling, exercising or during long periods of inactivity. BrightLife Direct has been in the medical compression industry for over 15 years, providing customers with great prices on Allegro, Jobst, Mediven, Sigvaris, Juzo, Therafirm and more. Health checked and cleared for take-off - Irish Times

Summer has arrived, and with it the prospect of fun in the sun. And, for many people, that means booking a flight to warmer climes. With bags packed, passports and tickets checked, you might feel ready for take-off, but before you rush off to the airport, take a minute to consider your health. Dr Mark Murphy, spokesman for the Irish College of General Practitioners, outlines a few simple steps to ensure we arrive as fresh and healthy as possible at our holiday destination:. Hydration “The air within aircraft cabins is dry, and for those who are fit and healthy, this will not result in any significant dehydration,” says Murphy. However, he says, if you drink alcohol, or drinks containing caffeine, dehydration could develop, “so passengers should drink sufficient water to keep urine its normal pale colour”. The dry air can also dehydrate skin and lips, so it’s good to keep moisturiser handy. Altitude The GP explains that high altitude is generally considered to be from 2,400 metres (8,000 feet) so aircraft cabins are maintained at a pressure equivalent to between 1,800 and 2,400 metres. This means that altitude sickness symptoms are not usual during flights, but people with certain health conditions should still take precautions. “Those with pre-existing lung or heart problems may be more likely to experience symptoms during or after flights, and being aware that they may be due to altitude can be helpful. Dehydration may make symptoms worse, as may strenuous exertion, so people with serious pre-existing lung disease may need to seek specialist advice before planning flights and sometimes request, in advance, supplementary oxygen supplies [for... Medication As air travel can have an adverse effect on young children, elderly people or people with certain medical conditions, Murphy says ensuring your medical supplies are up to date is crucial. “Passengers should remember to carry medication in their hand luggage to ensure they are not lost in transit and can be taken at the appropriate times. Patients with diabetes should be prepared for any eventuality (delays, cancellations, rerouting or stopovers). They should carry extra food and snacks to ensure adequate intake or, perhaps, to supplement airline food. And if you are prone to travel sickness, consider taking an anti-sickness tablet, as persistent vomiting can lead. Source: www.irishtimes.com
